Cohort
A group of customers who placed their first order in the same period. Shopify’s cohort report groups customers this way and follows each group over time.

Shopify’s Help Center says its customer cohort analysis report groups customers “based on the date that they placed their first order” (Customers reports).
The report can project spend per customer, but the projection uses each cohort’s previous 24 months of store data. Without 24 months of data, the projection toggle does not appear.
A cohort counts customers, and Shopify counts profiles. Our reasoning, not a Shopify statement: a second profile for the same person can show up as a new customer in a later cohort.
