Is MergeGuard safe for your Shopify store?
MergeGuard for Shopify shows the evidence for every duplicate group. Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment. Shopify verifies each merge and History records it. Merges are permanent, a Shopify rule, so MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each customer. It never messages your customers.

What happens in a merge
With manual review, a merge goes through five steps:
- Evidence. MergeGuard shows why it thinks the profiles are one person: which name, email, phone and address details match.
- You decide. You choose the profile to keep and which details the merged customer keeps.
- You confirm. The final check states that the merge is permanent.
- Shopify verifies. MergeGuard waits until Shopify has verified the merge, then shows “Shopify verified the merged customer.”
- History records it. The record keeps the customer kept and each customer merged away, the details kept, Shopify’s verification and a snapshot of each customer.
If you switch on automatic merging, the settings you chose take the place of steps 2 and 3 for strong matches, and for groups that need your judgment if you added them. Steps 4 and 5 still happen for every merge. How it works walks through each step with a demo customer.
What can and can’t be undone
| Action | Can it be undone? |
|---|---|
| Merge | No. Shopify merges are permanent. MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each customer. |
| Contact fix (such as an email typo) | Yes, once. The undo is its own record and uses 1 contact fix. |
| Marked not a duplicate | It can be restored to your list. Restoring doesn’t undo a merge. |
| Klaviyo profile merge | No. Klaviyo profile merges can’t be undone. MergeGuard keeps a copy of both profiles. |
A contact fix doesn’t change the customer’s subscription. For example, correcting gmial.com to gmail.com Demo store (Northsail Supply) fixes the address and leaves their marketing status as it was.
Marketing consent when profiles merge
If any of the merged profiles is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer stays subscribed, because they are the same person. Shopify’s own merge works the same way. Its help page says: “If the customer is subscribed to email and SMS text marketing in one profile, but not in the other, then the merged profile is subscribed.” (Shopify Help Center)
That’s why every merge starts with evidence and your decision, either your confirmation or automatic merging you switched on for strong matches or groups that need your judgment. A wrong merge could subscribe someone who never agreed.
Guardrails that always apply
- MergeGuard never messages your customers.
- Audience sync never unsubscribes or deletes anyone, and syncing never changes consent. Privacy deletion requests are handled as the law requires, as described in our privacy policy.
- Protected profiles, the ones Shopify won’t merge, are never merged automatically. Read why Shopify blocks some merges.
- Automatic work stops before your allowance runs out.
- Connecting Klaviyo never starts a sync, and Klaviyo merging stays off until you turn it on. Lists go to Klaviyo only when you choose. See MergeGuard with Klaviyo.

Questions merchants ask
Can I try MergeGuard without changing anything?
Yes. Installing doesn’t merge anything. You can review every duplicate group and its evidence before you merge a single one, and automatic merging stays off until you switch it on. The Free plan includes 25 merges and 5 contact fixes.
Can I undo a merge?
No. Shopify merges are permanent. MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each merged customer and records every merge in History. The snapshot and the record show what changed. They don’t reverse the merge.
Does MergeGuard change anything in Klaviyo?
Only when you sync a list, or when you turn on Klaviyo merging. A sync never changes anyone’s consent. With merging on, MergeGuard asks Klaviyo to merge the matching profiles after each merge in Shopify, and Klaviyo’s rules decide the merged profile’s consent. Klaviyo profile merges can’t be undone.
