Find duplicate customers and see why they match
MergeGuard for Shopify scans your customers and groups profiles that look like one person. Each group shows the matching name, email, phone and address details and a recommended profile. In a group’s review you choose the details to keep. Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.

Four different emails, one address and the same phone on three. You decide whether it is one person.
Your regular looks like three new shoppers
A shopper checks out as a guest, then again with a new email, and Shopify starts a new profile each time. Every profile holds a slice of their orders, so your best customer can look like three first-time buyers. Shopify’s own merge joins two profiles you already know about, and its help page doesn’t describe a way to find duplicates for you. MergeGuard scans the whole store and puts the profiles that look like one person into groups, so you start from the evidence.

How it works
MergeGuard sorts your customers into groups
The scan puts profiles that look like one person into groups and sorts them into Strong (details match closely), Needs your judgment (some details differ) and New (found since your last visit). Protected groups and groups marked not a duplicate sit under Show.
Open a group and see why it matches
The review sheet shows why we think it’s one person. You see which names, emails, phones and addresses match across the profiles, and which profile we recommend keeping.
Choose what the customer keeps
When you review one group, pick the email, phone, address and other details the merged customer keeps, one field at a time. In a bulk merge, MergeGuard picks each group’s details.
Merge, or mark it not a duplicate
Merge opens a final check that says the merge can’t be undone and is recorded in History. Not a duplicate tells MergeGuard these are different people. A group you don’t decide stays in your open groups.
Shopify verifies the result
After you confirm, the app shows “Shopify is verifying the result.” and then “Shopify verified the merged customer.” The record goes to History.
How groups are sorted
- Strong: details match closely.
- Needs your judgment: some details differ. Check what matches and what doesn’t before you decide.
- New: groups found since your last visit.
- All open: every open group.
The Show filter also lists Protected groups, which Shopify won’t merge (see protected profiles for why), and groups Marked not a duplicate. Restore puts a group back in your list.
Merge many duplicate groups at once
Shopify merges two profiles at a time. MergeGuard merges a whole group into one customer with one confirmation, and it can merge every strong match in a single confirmed action. Each merge counts against your allowance as the number of profiles minus one, so a group of five uses four merges. For a step-by-step guide, read how to merge many duplicate customers at once.
Before your first merge, read what happens when you merge customers. It covers orders, marketing subscriptions and why merges are permanent.
What you control
- Which details are kept
- When you review one group, you choose the email, phone, address and other details the merged customer keeps. In a bulk merge of strong matches, MergeGuard picks each group’s details.
- Marked not a duplicate
- Groups you mark as not a duplicate leave your list and never merge. Restore puts a group back in your list.
- Merge every strong match at once
- In strong matches the details match closely. You can merge all of them in one confirmed action, and MergeGuard picks each group’s details. If you don’t have enough merges left in your allowance, MergeGuard merges some of them and the rest wait.
What it never does
- Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.
- A group marked not a duplicate never merges.
- Protected profiles are never merged automatically.
- MergeGuard never messages your customers.
What can be undone
Merges are permanent because Shopify merges can’t be undone. MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each merged customer, and a group marked not a duplicate can be restored to your list.
- Merges
- Permanent.Shopify merges can’t be undone. MergeGuard keeps a snapshot.
- Contact fixes
- Can be undone once. The undo is its own record and uses 1 fix.

Questions merchants ask
Which profile is kept when I merge a group?
MergeGuard recommends a profile to keep from the profiles that have the details your merge rule asks for, or from every profile when none has them. The kept customer uses a subscribed email or phone when one of the profiles has it. When you review a group, you choose which details to keep before you confirm. A bulk merge of strong matches lets MergeGuard pick each group’s details.
Can I merge more than two profiles at once?
Yes. A whole group, for example four profiles, merges into one customer with a single confirmation. Shopify’s own merge handles two profiles at a time. A group of four uses three merges from your allowance.
What happens to the orders on each profile?
Orders from all the merged profiles appear under one customer. Shopify doesn’t let you move a single order from one customer to another, so merging the profiles is how a split order history comes together.
What happens to marketing consent when profiles merge?
If any of the merged profiles is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer stays subscribed, as in Shopify’s own merge. That’s why every merge starts with evidence and your decision: your confirmation, or automatic merging you switched on for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.
Can I undo a merge?
No. Shopify merges are permanent. MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each merged customer and saves every merge in History, but neither reverses a merge. Check why the profiles match and which details are kept before you confirm.
Can I try it for free?
Yes. The Free plan includes 25 merges and 5 contact fixes, once per store. Paid plans start at $29 a month, and Starter, Growth and Scale come with a 14-day free trial.
