MergeGuard vs Shopify’s built-in customer merge

Shopify’s own merge is included with Shopify and merges two profiles at a time, and you start each one yourself. MergeGuard for Shopify finds duplicate groups and shows why each matches. Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment. Both follow Shopify’s rules: merges are permanent.

Which one fits your store

Choose Shopify customer merge (built in) if

  • You have a handful of duplicates and already know which profiles they are.
  • You merge pairs, never groups of three or more.
  • You don’t need marketing lists that count people instead of profiles, or History’s record of the details kept, Shopify’s verification and a snapshot of each merged customer.
  • You want to spend nothing beyond your Shopify plan.

Choose MergeGuard for Shopify if

  • You don’t know how many duplicates your store has.
  • Duplicates keep appearing from guest checkout, typos and new emails.
  • You need to merge groups of more than two profiles.
  • You want to see why profiles matched before you confirm a permanent merge.
  • Your newsletter or win-back lists count the same person more than once.

Side by side

Finding and reviewing

Shopify’s built-in merge MergeGuard for Shopify
Finds duplicates for you Not described on Shopify’s help page. You start each merge Finds duplicate groups across the store and sorts them into Strong, Needs your judgment and New, with protected groups shown separately
Why profiles match You compare the profiles yourself “Why we think it’s one person”: the matching name, email, phone and address details for each group

Merge controls and records

Shopify’s built-in merge MergeGuard for Shopify
Profiles per merge 2. Repeat for each extra profile A whole group in one confirmed merge
Many groups at once One pair at a time Confirm every strong match in one pass
Automatic merging Not described on Shopify’s help page Optional on Growth, Scale and Enterprise, for strong matches, and for groups that need your judgment only if you add them. Protected profiles are never merged automatically, and it stops before your allowance runs out
Which details are kept You review and choose the merged profile’s details before confirming Your merge rule sets which details the recommended profile prefers, and every profile is considered when none has them. You choose every detail when you review a group; a bulk merge picks each group’s details
Marketing consent “If the customer is subscribed to email and SMS text marketing in one profile, but not in the other, then the merged profile is subscribed.” The same rule: if any merged profile is subscribed, the merged customer stays subscribed
Profiles Shopify blocks Can’t be merged Can’t be merged either. Shown as protected profiles with the Shopify blocker for each profile, and the audiences still count them as one person
Undo Not possible Not possible, because it’s a Shopify merge. MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each merged customer as a record
Record of changes The customer’s timeline History adds the details kept, Shopify’s verification of the merged customer, and a snapshot of each merged customer

Beyond merging

Shopify’s built-in merge MergeGuard for Shopify
Email typo fixes Not part of Shopify’s merge Suggests corrections such as gmial.com → gmail.com. You can check them first, and each fix can be undone once
Marketing audiences Not part of Shopify’s merge Newsletter cleanup, win-back, VIP and Subscription (subscribers who may cancel) lists that count people. Sync to Klaviyo or export a CSV
Cost Included with Shopify Free plan with 25 merges once. Paid plans from $29 a month, billed through Shopify

When Shopify’s built-in merge is enough

You have a few duplicates you already know about. You merge them in pairs. You don’t need audiences or History’s record of each merge. In that case, Shopify’s own merge does the job and costs nothing extra.

When to keep profiles separate

Some profiles look like duplicates and shouldn’t be merged, whichever tool you use:

  • Two people share an email, phone or address, such as people who live together, a gift buyer or a business account.
  • It isn’t clear the profiles are one person, and you can’t check.
  • Shopify blocks the profile, for example because of a subscription contract, a B2B link or store credit.
  • The duplicates don’t affect your marketing or reporting, and the cleanup isn’t worth your time.

Merges are permanent, so leaving a pair alone is the safer choice when you’re unsure. The safe merge checklist covers each check.

Rules both share

Both merge through Shopify, so the same limits apply. A merge can’t be reversed. The customer isn’t notified. Nine situations block a merge, listed on why Shopify blocks a merge. Combined notes can be up to 5,000 characters and tags up to 250.
