Terms of service
Last updated
These terms are an agreement between you, the merchant who installs MergeGuard for Shopify, and Caelena Software Labs (“we”, “us”), its developer. By installing or using MergeGuard, you agree to them. If you use MergeGuard for a business, you agree on behalf of that business.
1. What MergeGuard does
MergeGuard is a Shopify app that finds duplicate customer profiles and merges them, with your confirmation or through automatic merging you switch on for strong matches or groups that need your judgment, so every order sits on one customer. It also suggests fixes for mistyped emails, builds audience lists, syncs lists to Klaviyo when you choose, and records every change in History.
On Growth, Scale and Enterprise you can turn on Klaviyo profile merging in Settings. It’s off until you turn it on. When it’s on, MergeGuard asks Klaviyo to merge the matching Klaviyo profiles after each merge in Shopify, whether you confirmed the merge or automatic merging made it.
2. Who can use it
MergeGuard is for businesses with a Shopify store. You need the authority to install apps on that store and to let MergeGuard work with its customer data.
3. Merges are permanent
Shopify customer merges can’t be undone. Once profiles are merged, neither you, we nor Shopify can split them again.
MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each merged customer and saves every merge in History. The snapshot is a record. It doesn’t reverse a merge, and we can’t restore a merged customer from it.
Klaviyo profile merges are permanent too. Before each one, MergeGuard saves a copy of both Klaviyo profiles for your records. The copy can’t reverse a Klaviyo merge.
A contact fix can be undone once, and the undo uses 1 fix. Restoring a group marked not a duplicate puts it back in your list and doesn’t undo a merge.
4. You decide what merges
Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.
- When you confirm a merge, you decide that the profiles belong to one person and which details are kept. MergeGuard shows why the profiles match. The decision is yours.
- When you switch on automatic merging, you authorize MergeGuard to merge every strong match, and every group that needs your judgment if you added them, without asking you about each one. Automatic merging stays off until you switch it on, and you can switch it off at any time. Protected profiles are never merged automatically, and automatic work stops before your allowance runs out.
If any merged profile is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer stays subscribed. This is Shopify’s rule. Merging two different people could subscribe someone who never agreed, so check why the profiles match before you confirm or automate.
Shopify refuses some merges, for example when a profile has ever had a subscription contract. MergeGuard can’t bypass Shopify’s rules.
5. Your responsibilities
- You are responsible for the customer data in your store and for having the right to process it, including marketing consent.
- You are responsible for the merges you confirm and for the automatic merging settings you choose.
- If you turn on Klaviyo profile merging, you are responsible for that choice. Klaviyo’s merge rules decide the merged profile’s consent and suppression. MergeGuard doesn’t check, copy or change them.
- You tell your customers about how you handle their data, as the law requires.
- You don’t use MergeGuard to break the law or Shopify’s terms.
We handle your customers’ data as your processor under our Data Processing Agreement, which forms part of these terms.
6. Plans and allowance
Plans, prices and what each includes are listed on our pricing page.
- Merges. One merge combines two profiles into one. A group of four profiles uses 3 merges, and a group of five uses 4.
- Monthly plans. Monthly plans get a new allowance every month.
- Yearly plans. Yearly plans get the whole year’s allowance at the start of the year. It doesn’t reset each month.
- No rollover. Unused merges don’t carry over to the next billing period.
- Contact fixes. Each plan includes contact fixes equal to its merges divided by 5, rounded down. Undoing a fix uses 1 fix.
- Exports and Klaviyo syncs. Audience list exports and Klaviyo syncs count toward your plan in the same way. The Duplicates list export and every History export are open on every plan and don’t count toward exports.
- Free plan. The Free plan includes 25 merges and 5 contact fixes once, for the life of the store.
- Alerts. MergeGuard tells you when you have used 80% of your allowance and when none is left.
7. Free trial
Starter, Growth and Scale come with a 14-day free trial, on monthly and yearly billing. The trial includes a smaller allowance, shown on the pricing page.
Trial merges and contact fixes are one pool for the life of the store, and merges you already used on Free count toward it.
A repeat trial gets the plan’s features and no new merges, contact fixes or trial exports.
On day 11, MergeGuard emails you that the trial ends in 3 days. A trial you cancel gets no email.
8. Billing
Billed through Shopify; renews automatically; change or cancel in Shopify.
Monthly plans renew each month and yearly plans renew each year until you cancel.
- Upgrades. An upgrade in the same billing period adds a prorated share of the new plan’s allowance.
- Downgrades. A downgrade applies at the end of the billing cycle, when Shopify applies it.
9. Cancelling and refunds
You can cancel at any time in Shopify. Cancelling stops the next renewal. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for. A cancel or freeze made outside the app can take up to a day to apply.
We don’t give refunds, including for partly used periods, unused allowance or merges you later regret. This doesn’t affect any right to a refund that the law gives you and that can’t be excluded.
10. Uninstalling
You can uninstall MergeGuard at any time from Shopify admin. Merges already made stay in place, because they are permanent in Shopify. What happens to the data we hold is described in the privacy policy.
11. Changes to MergeGuard and to these terms
We improve MergeGuard over time and list changes on What’s new. We may change these terms. Before a material change, we email your store’s contact address 30 days ahead. If you object, reply to that email. You can also uninstall MergeGuard before the change takes effect. For every change, we update this page and the date at the top.
12. Our liability
We build MergeGuard with care, and we show why profiles match and ask for confirmation because merges are permanent. We can’t promise that every suggested match is correct, which is why the decision to merge, or to automate merging, is yours.
MergeGuard is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties beyond those stated in these terms, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for all claims about MergeGuard is limited to the fees you paid us for MergeGuard in the 12 months before the claim. This doesn’t limit any liability that the law doesn’t allow us to limit.
13. Ending the agreement
You can end this agreement by uninstalling MergeGuard. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or Shopify’s terms. Before we do, we email your store’s contact address 30 days ahead. We may act without that notice in cases of abuse or non-payment, or where the law requires it.
