Why can’t I merge customers in Shopify?
Shopify refuses to merge two customer profiles in nine situations. Either profile has, or once had, a subscription contract, is linked to a B2B company, has a saved credit card, store credit or a Multipass login, was deleted or erased, or a merge or data request is already in progress. Some clear with time. Others stay for that profile.

Shopify lists nine cases where it won’t merge two customer profiles. They come from Shopify’s help page on merging customers, checked on 11 October 2026. Each one below gives Shopify’s wording, what it means and what you can do.
MergeGuard for Shopify merges through Shopify, so these rules apply to MergeGuard too. It can’t get around them.
Shopify’s merge rules at a glance
| Rule | Shopify’s built-in merge |
|---|---|
| Profiles per merge | 2. “To merge more than 2 customers together, repeat the procedure for each additional profile.” |
| Can it be undone? | No. “After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.” |
| Is the customer told? | No. “The customer isn’t notified when you merge their customer profiles.” |
| Does Shopify find duplicates for you? | Its help page describes merging only as a manual action you start. |
| What happens to orders? | Orders from both profiles appear under the merged profile. |
| Who picks the merged details? | You review and select the merged profile’s information before you confirm. |
Shopify’s page also sets limits on the merged profile: notes up to 5,000 characters and up to 250 tags.
The 9 reasons a merge is blocked
1. A subscription contract, now or in the past
“Either of the customer profiles has, or has ever had, a subscription contract.”
What it means: even a subscription that ended long ago blocks the merge. Because the rule covers past contracts, this blocker stays with that profile.
What you can do: keep the profiles separate in Shopify. To treat them as one person for marketing, MergeGuard can count them together in Audiences without touching the subscription.
2. A B2B company link
“Either of the customer profiles is a B2B customer actively linked to a company, or still linked to past B2B orders.”
What it means: a wholesale or B2B profile is blocked while it’s linked to a company, and still blocked while past B2B orders remain linked to it.
What you can do: keep the profiles separate while the company link or past B2B orders remain. MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason, and Audiences can still count the profiles as one person.
3. A saved (vaulted) credit card
“Either of the customer profiles has a vaulted credit card.”
What it means: one of the profiles has a card saved for future payments.
What you can do: follow Shopify’s vaulted-card instructions if the card should be removed from its company location. While the profile still has the vaulted card, keep the profiles separate. MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason.
4. A store credit account
“Either of the customer profiles has a store credit account.”
What it means: one of the profiles holds a store credit account.
What you can do: keep the profiles separate in Shopify. MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason, and Audiences can still count the profiles as one person.
5. A Multipass login
“Either of the customer profiles has a multipass login.”
What it means: one of the profiles signs in through Multipass. Shopify’s developer docs say Multipass login “is for store owners who have a separate website and a Shopify store” and signs those customers in to the store with the email they used on the other site (Customer authentication).
What you can do: keep the profiles separate while the Multipass login applies. MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason, and Audiences can still count the profiles as one person.
6. A deleted profile
“Either of the customer profiles has been deleted.”
What it means: one of the profiles was deleted from your store.
What you can do: the deleted profile stays separate. MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason.
7. Redaction
“Either of the customer profiles has been redacted or a data redaction request is in progress.”
What it means: a privacy erasure request was made for this customer, and their personal data has been removed or is being removed. Shopify’s Help Center says that when you erase a customer’s personal data, “Shopify redacts information such as the customer’s name and address, but the profile and order history remain in your Shopify admin” (Managing customers). After you submit an erasure request, you have 10 days to cancel it (Processing customer data requests).
What you can do: keep the profiles separate while the data is redacted or the request is in progress. MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason.
8. A merge already in progress
“A customer profile merge is in progress.”
What it means: a customer profile merge is still running. This blocker applies while that merge is in progress.
What you can do: let the current merge finish, then review the group again. While it is running, MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason.
9. A customer data request in progress
“A customer data request is in progress.”
What it means: a customer data request is still open. This blocker applies while the request is in progress.
What you can do: let the data request finish, then review the group again. While it is open, MergeGuard shows the group as Protected with this reason.
For reasons 3 to 5, follow only the steps Shopify documents for changing that part of a profile. For vaulted cards, Shopify’s help page on vaulted cards says “Credit cards can be vaulted only by B2B customers” and explains how to delete a card from a company location.
How MergeGuard handles blocked groups
- Protected profiles. Groups Shopify won’t merge show as protected profiles. MergeGuard shows the Shopify blocker for each profile that can’t merge.
- Never merged automatically. Protected profiles are never merged automatically, even when automatic merging is on.
- Still counted as one person. The Newsletter, VIP, Win-back and Subscription audiences count a customer split across protected profiles as one person, such as a VIP whose spend sits on two profiles. Their subscription isn’t touched.

Questions merchants ask
Can I merge more than two customers at once in Shopify?
Not in one step. Shopify merges two profiles at a time and says to repeat the procedure for each extra profile. MergeGuard for Shopify merges a group of several profiles into one customer with a single confirmation. A group of 4 uses 3 merges.
Can a Shopify customer merge be undone?
No. Shopify says that after the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process. Check the details before you merge. MergeGuard also keeps a snapshot of each customer it merges, as a record.
Will the customer be told about the merge?
No. Shopify’s help page says the customer isn’t notified when you merge their customer profiles.
What happens to email marketing consent when profiles merge?
Shopify says that if the customer is subscribed to email and SMS marketing in one profile but not the other, the merged profile is subscribed. MergeGuard follows the same rule: if any merged profile is subscribed, the merged customer stays subscribed.
Can an app merge customers that Shopify blocks?
MergeGuard can’t. It merges through Shopify, so the same nine blockers apply. It marks those groups as protected profiles, shows which blocker applies, and never merges them automatically.
