Shopify’s Help Center says a profile “is created in your Shopify admin when a customer interacts with your business”: by signing up for your mailing list or an account, placing an order, or starting an order and abandoning the checkout. Staff can also add profiles by hand (Managing customers).
The same page says: “Each profile can have only one email address.” So a shopper who uses a second email can’t sit on the same profile without a merge, and Shopify counts the two profiles as two customers. That is how a duplicate customer profile starts.
