A duplicate looks like a separate customer in your admin. One profile might hold a shopper’s first two orders under a work email, and another holds their next order under a phone number. Anything that counts customers, such as your customer list, a segment or an email list, counts that person twice.
Shared details are evidence, and evidence can point the wrong way. Two profiles with the same address can belong to two people who live together, such as a couple or a parent and child. They stay as two customers, and in MergeGuard you can mark them as family members. Before you merge anything, check what the profiles actually share.
