The rules for collecting and recording consent depend on where your customers live, so check the rules for each country you sell to.

A merge changes consent in one direction. Shopify’s Help Center says: “If the customer is subscribed to email and SMS text marketing in one profile, but not in the other, then the merged profile is subscribed.” If any of the merged profiles is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer stays subscribed. So check the evidence before each merge, because a wrong merge could subscribe someone who never agreed. In MergeGuard, nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.

MergeGuard for Shopify’s audiences never unsubscribe or delete anyone, and syncing a list to Klaviyo never changes consent. A contact fix doesn’t change the customer’s subscription either. See safety.
