Every system that stores customers decides by its own rules which records are the same person. Klaviyo documents how it matches profiles by their identifiers in its identity resolution guide. Shopify’s Help Center describes merging customers as an action the merchant starts. So one person can be one customer in Shopify and two profiles in your email platform, or the other way round.
Good matching shows you why it matched. MergeGuard for Shopify puts the name, email, phone and address of each profile side by side and sorts each group as a strong match or one that needs your judgment. You can see why it thinks two profiles are one person before anything merges. See Klaviyo integration.
