Shopify’s developer documentation describes a subscription contract as “the agreement between a customer and a merchant” (Subscriptions).
It matters for cleanup because of the first of the nine reasons Shopify gives for refusing a merge: “Either of the customer profiles has, or has ever had, a subscription contract.” The word “ever” means a canceled subscription still blocks the merge. The full list is on why Shopify blocks some merges, and a profile it applies to is a protected profile.
