- VIP customers
- Duplicate profiles
My best customers have two accounts, so my VIP list misses them
A VIP rule asks whether a customer has spent enough, but Shopify answers for one profile at a time. A regular whose orders sit on two profiles can fall short on both. Add up spend per person before you set the threshold, and count people first, because merging is permanent and some profiles cannot be merged at all.

The question this post answers
Asked on Shopify Community on
A merchant said customers accidentally make several accounts under different email addresses, which hurts the rewards program because rewards depend on shopping history. Points can be moved between accounts by hand, but shopping history cannot, and a VIP tier that needs $5,000 of spend depends on that history. The merchant asked how to combine the accounts. Later posts in the thread report that Shopify launched its merge feature in October 2022.
“our rewards are based on their shopping history”
We paraphrase the question and leave out names. We opened the thread again on and it still said this.
Read the original thread on Shopify CommunityA loyalty program makes a promise: spend enough and you move up a tier. The merchant in this thread had built that promise on shopping history, and then found that a customer’s history is not always in one place.
The arithmetic of a missed VIP
A VIP rule asks whether a customer has spent enough. Shopify records spend on a profile, and a customer can hold more than one. A regular who buys under a work email one month and a home email the next has two profiles, and each holds only the spend made under it.
Worked example (made up)
- VIP threshold: $400 of spend
- $260 on the first profile
- $190 on the second profile
- $260 + $190 = $450, above the $400 threshold
Neither profile reaches the threshold. Together they clear it. A report of VIPs by profile misses this customer, and so does every perk meant for VIPs.
At store scale the same effect looks like this in our demo store: 18 VIPs on single profiles → 27 VIPs as people Demo store (Northsail Supply). The extra VIPs were always there, split across profiles.
What it costs
The first cost is the customer. Someone who spends like a VIP gets ordinary treatment, and they notice. The second cost is the customer who is nearly a VIP. If their spend is split, you cannot see how close they are.
The third cost is trust in your own numbers. If you set the VIP threshold from the spend of your top customers, a split list sets it from a distorted picture.
How to reason about it
Three decisions come before any list.
- Pick the window. Lifetime spend rewards tenure. A 12-month window tracks current behavior. Match the window to the perk. Our guide on lifetime or 12-month VIP spend compares them.
- Set the threshold from your own spend. Choose a share of your customers and read the dollar figure off your data. The guide to setting a VIP threshold shows how.
- Count people, not profiles. Add spend across the profiles that belong to one person before you compare it with the threshold.
Why merging is not always the answer
This thread is from April 2022. Later posts in it report that Shopify launched its merge feature that October, and the first merchants to try it hit an error that a customer with a credit card could not be merged. Shopify still merges two profiles at a time, and a merge is permanent. It also refuses some profiles outright, including any profile that has a vaulted credit card, a store credit account or has ever held a subscription contract.
Some of your best customers may sit on exactly those profiles. For them, counting spend together without merging is the only route. Counting is a reporting step and changes nothing in Shopify. A merge is a separate decision, and the safe merge checklist is the place to start.
What MergeGuard does for a VIP list
The VIP audience in MergeGuard for Shopify counts people. It adds up spend across all of a customer’s profiles, including profiles Shopify will not merge. You set the threshold, the spend window and whether refunds are subtracted, and the preview shows how many VIPs you have before you save.
The VIP lists include:
- VIP customers, everyone who meets your VIP rule.
- VIPs found across profiles, where no single profile is a VIP alone and together they are.
- VIPs on profiles Shopify can’t merge, whose profiles stay separate while their spend still counts together.
- Close to VIP, people who spent from the VIP amount less a margin up to the VIP amount, and who ordered in the last 12 months. The margin is 5%, 10% or 20%, or an amount you type.
- VIPs slipping, who are still VIPs and overdue for their next order.
- Former VIPs gone cold, who spent the VIP amount or more and have had no order in 12 months.
VIP lists come with Growth, Scale and Enterprise. Free and Starter see the VIP counts. MergeGuard never messages your customers. Audiences never unsubscribe or delete anyone, and syncing never changes consent, so what you do with a list stays in your hands: sync it to Klaviyo or export it as a CSV.
