Build an audience list that counts each person once

Audiences count each person once, even when their orders sit on several profiles. Pick a ready list, adjust its rules while the preview shows how the list changes, then sync it to Klaviyo or export a CSV. Newsletter comes with Starter, VIP with Growth, and Win-back and Subscription with Scale.

At a glance

  1. Pick a ready list

Choose an audience your plan includes, then a list inside it. Each audience comes with its own lists.

  2. Adjust the rules

Change a rule, such as your VIP spend threshold or a customer’s usual time between orders. The live preview shows how the list changes before you save.

  3. Save the list

The preview shows each rule change before you save, and you can edit a rule again at any time.

  4. Use the list

Sync it to Klaviyo, or export a CSV for any other tool.

Audiences join the profiles that belong to one person before they build a list. A regular whose orders sit on two profiles counts once, so the list reflects people and not profiles.

Which audience your plan includes

Plan Audiences with lists
Free Counts only
Starter Newsletter
Growth Newsletter, VIP
Scale Newsletter, VIP, Win-back, Subscription
Enterprise Everything in Scale, or more

On a plan without an audience, you still see its counts. Each plan is listed on the pricing page.

The four audiences

Audience What its lists find Rules you set
Newsletter Subscribed contacts that belong to the same person The list you pick, such as All subscribers or Subscribed on more than one profile
VIP Customers whose spend across all their profiles reaches your threshold Spend threshold, spend window, whether refunds are subtracted, minimum orders
Win-back Customers who really stopped ordering, with anyone still buying under another profile left off Counts as stopped after, then wait, how many orders make a regular
Subscription Subscribers who may cancel, such as those buying their subscription product separately How far back to look, and the grace period

Read the feature pages for the full lists: Newsletter cleanup, VIP and Win-back. The Audiences overview covers all four.

VIP: rules and lists

The VIP audience adds each customer’s spend across all their profiles, including profiles Shopify won’t merge. You set four rules:

  • Threshold: how much a customer has to spend to count as a VIP.
  • Spend window: the period spend is added over, All time or Last 12 months. All time also asks for an order in the last 12 months.
  • Refunds: Subtract refunds (refunded money does not count toward VIP) or Include refunds (spend counts before refunds).
  • Minimum orders: how many orders a customer needs as well as the spend.

The preview shows how many VIPs the list holds before you save. The lists are VIP customers, VIPs found across profiles, VIPs on profiles Shopify can’t merge, Close to VIP (customers near the threshold who haven’t reached it), VIPs slipping and Former VIPs gone cold. To choose a threshold and a window, read how to set a VIP threshold and lifetime or 12-month spend.

Win-back: rules and lists

Win-back counts orders on every profile and, by default, judges each customer against their own pace. You set three rules:

  • Counts as stopped after: when a customer counts as stopped. By default it is their own usual time between orders, and you can choose 90, 180 or 365 days instead.
  • Then wait: extra days MergeGuard waits before listing a customer, so a slightly late order isn’t flagged.
  • Discount regulars: how many orders make a customer a regular for the Uses discounts on several profiles list.

The Win back group has Stopped ordering, Ordering less often, Buys on more than one profile, and Ordered once, never came back. The How they shop group has Uses discounts on several profiles, Buys on sale every time, Buys in bulk and Family members, the family members you marked as not duplicates. To judge who has stopped, read when a customer has stopped buying.

Subscription: rules and lists

The Subscription audience reads each subscriber’s orders across all their profiles. You set how far back it looks and the grace period. The lists sit in four groups. May cancel soon has Everyone who may cancel, Buying their subscription product separately and Skipping or delaying deliveries. Details out of date has Subscription email isn’t reaching them and May have moved. Win back to subscription has Stopped their subscription, still buying. Ready to buy more has Buying other products separately and Buys on a schedule, not subscribed. For the signs behind them, read subscribers who buy outside their subscription.

What Audiences never do

  • MergeGuard never messages your customers.
  • Audiences never unsubscribe or delete anyone, and syncing never changes consent.
  • Counting protected profiles as one person never touches their subscription.

After you save

Export the list as a CSV (how exports are counted) or send it to Klaviyo on Growth and above (how to sync a list to Klaviyo). If a contact should leave your list, you remove them yourself in your email platform.
