How to bulk merge duplicate customers in Shopify

Shopify admin merges two customer profiles at a time, so a large cleanup means repeating the steps for every pair. To bulk merge duplicate customers, MergeGuard for Shopify merges a whole duplicate group with one confirmation and can merge every strong match in one confirmed pass. On Growth, Scale and Enterprise, automatic merging can handle strong matches for you.

At a glance

  1. Merge every strong match in one pass

Strong matches are groups whose details match closely. Confirm them all in one action, and MergeGuard picks each group’s details. If you don’t have enough merges left, MergeGuard merges some of them and the rest wait.

  2. Review the groups that need your judgment

Open each group, check what matches and what doesn’t, and choose Merge or Not a duplicate.

  3. Merge whole groups, not pairs

A whole duplicate group (e.g. 4 profiles) merges into one customer with a single confirmation. Counts as profiles − 1 merges: a group of 4 uses 3 merges

  4. Switch on automatic merging for strong matches

On Growth, Scale and Enterprise, turn on Merge strong matches automatically. Add groups that need your judgment only if you trust them. Protected profiles never merge automatically.

In Shopify admin

Shopify’s built-in merge combines two profiles at a time. Its help page says: “To merge more than 2 customers together, repeat the procedure for each additional profile.” You also find each duplicate yourself, because Shopify’s help page doesn’t describe a way to find them for you.

For a handful of known duplicates, that’s enough. See MergeGuard vs Shopify’s built-in merge for when each one fits.

In MergeGuard

MergeGuard finds duplicate groups across your store and sorts them into Strong (details match closely) and Needs your judgment (some details differ). Groups Shopify won’t merge show as Protected. From there you have three ways to merge many at once.

Every strong match in one pass

Strong matches are groups whose details match closely. Confirm them all in one action, and MergeGuard picks each group’s details. Each one ends with Shopify’s verification and is saved in History. If you don’t have enough merges left, MergeGuard merges some of them and the rest wait until you have merges available.

Whole groups with one confirmation

A group can hold more than two profiles. MergeGuard merges the whole group into one customer with a single confirmation. Before you confirm, you can change which email, phone and address the customer keeps.

Automatic merging

Automatic merging is available on Growth, Scale and Enterprise. It stays off until you switch it on. It merges strong matches, and groups that need your judgment only if you turn on Also merge groups that need your judgment. You can also list tags it skips, under “Automatic merging skips groups with these tags”.

Protected profiles are never merged automatically. Automatic work stops before your allowance runs out.

How merges count against your allowance

1 merge = 2 profiles merged into one (a group of 5 = 4 merges) Monthly plans get a new allowance every month.

Yearly plans get the whole year’s allowance at the start of the year. Paid plans include:

Plan Merges per month Merges per year
Starter 150 1,800
Growth 300 3,600
Scale 500 6,000

The Free plan includes 25 merges once. See pricing for Enterprise.

Before a large cleanup

Merges are permanent. Shopify says that after profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process. Bulk merging confirms many merges at once, so run the safe merge checklist on your merge rule first. Check what happens to marketing subscriptions too: if any merged profile is subscribed, the merged customer stays subscribed.
