What happens when you merge customer profiles in Shopify
Shopify combines two profiles into one. Orders, addresses, notes, tags and timeline events from both end up on the merged customer. If either profile is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged profile is subscribed. The customer isn’t notified, and the merge can’t be reversed. MergeGuard follows the same rules.

Help topics
Everything below comes from Shopify’s help page on merging customer profiles, checked on October 11, 2026. MergeGuard for Shopify merges through Shopify, so the same rules apply to every merge it makes.
The data that moves to the merged profile
Shopify lists this information as merged into one profile:
- Orders
- Draft orders
- Addresses
- Email address
- Phone number
- Name
- Notes
- Tags
- Tax settings
- Timeline events
- Credit cards
- Customer accounts
- Gift cards
- Discounts
Before you confirm, Shopify lets you review and choose the merged profile’s details, such as which email and phone it keeps.
Orders
Orders from both profiles appear under the merged customer, so one person’s order history sits in one place. Shopify also says that “Orders are permanently associated with the customer account that placed them”. You can’t move a single order from one customer to another. Merging the profiles is how the orders come together.
For example, in our demo store a customer with three profiles ends up as Amelia Hughes: 3 profiles, 4 + 3 + 2 orders → one customer with 9 orders Demo store (Northsail Supply).
Email and SMS marketing
Shopify’s rule: “If the customer is subscribed to email and SMS text marketing in one profile, but not in the other, then the merged profile is subscribed.”
MergeGuard follows it. If any profile in a merged group is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer stays subscribed. That’s why it matters to check the profiles are one person. Merging two different people could subscribe someone who never agreed.
The customer isn’t told
Shopify says: “The customer isn’t notified when you merge their customer profiles.” MergeGuard never messages your customers either.
Limits on the merged profile
Combined notes can be up to 5,000 characters, and combined tags up to 250.
Two profiles at a time in Shopify admin
Shopify admin merges two profiles at a time. Its help page says: “To merge more than 2 customers together, repeat the procedure for each additional profile.” MergeGuard can merge a whole group of profiles into one customer with a single confirmation. See how to merge many duplicates at once.
It’s permanent
Shopify says: “After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.”
MergeGuard keeps a snapshot of each merged customer and saves every merge in History, with the details kept and Shopify’s verification. The snapshot is a record of what each profile held. It doesn’t undo the merge. Read the safe merge checklist before you confirm.
When Shopify refuses a merge
Some profiles can’t be merged at all, for example a profile that has ever had a subscription contract. See all 9 reasons Shopify blocks a merge.
