Why you can’t merge customers in Shopify POS, and what to do instead
Not in the POS app, according to Shopify’s reply in the thread, and we found no Shopify page that describes a POS merge. Merging happens in the Shopify admin, so a shop can find its duplicates ahead of time and merge them outside trading hours. A merge is permanent, so confirm the profiles belong to one person first.

The question this post answers
Asked on Shopify Community on
A busy shop has to stop sales to merge customers in the Shopify admin. Some customers were entered with only a phone number and no name, and when staff try to create a customer during a sale, POS says the number is already taken. The shop asks for a merge option in the POS app. Shopify’s reply says merging customer profiles is not available within POS and that the feedback will go to its developers. A later post from the same shop says the delay slows it down a great deal.
“A simple fix would be a merge button in that screen in the app”
We paraphrase the question and leave out names. We opened the thread again on and it still said this.
Read the original thread on Shopify CommunityA till is a poor place to learn that a customer already exists. The shop in this thread was mid-sale when POS refused to create a customer, and the only way forward was a merge that lives somewhere else.
What happened
Some customers in this shop had been entered with a phone number and no name. Later, when staff tried to create a customer during a sale, POS said the number was already taken. To clear the duplicates the shop had to stop selling and merge the profiles in the Shopify admin. It asked for the same option inside the POS app.
Shopify replied a few days later that merging customer profiles is not available within POS, and that it would pass the feedback to its developers. Months later the shop wrote again to say the problem still slows a very busy store down.
What Shopify’s pages say
We read three Shopify Help pages on October 26, 2026. The page on adding a customer to the cart says to search by the customer’s name or email. The page on creating a profile says you can enter a first name, last name, email or phone number. Neither page mentions merging, or what happens when the phone number is already in use.
The page on managing customers gives merge steps for the Shopify admin and for the Shopify app on a phone. It says “After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.” It does not mention POS. We found no Shopify page that describes a merge inside the POS app, so the reply in the thread is the only statement we have about it, and it dates from 2024.
Our reading, which the thread does not confirm: a customer saved with a phone number alone cannot be found by a name or email search, so the till offers to create a new profile and Shopify rejects it.
What it costs
Stopping sales is the visible price. The quieter one is a split history. A regular who pays in store on a phone-only profile and online under an email address is two customers to every report. Their repeat purchases look like two first purchases, and the email list can reach only one of the two profiles.
What you can do today
- Merge outside trading hours. The merge belongs in the admin, so schedule it for when the till is quiet.
- Merge from a phone. The managing customers page gives steps for the Shopify app on a phone. It does not say those steps work inside POS, so treat the app as a second device for the manager.
- Take a name or email with the phone number. A profile with a name or email is one the cart search can find.
- Review on a schedule. A short weekly review finds new duplicates before they reach the till.
Merge only profiles you are sure belong to one person. A phone number can be shared by a family or by a business. The merge cannot be reversed, and if either profile is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged customer is subscribed. The guide on deleting or merging a duplicate sets out what each step does and what stops it.
What MergeGuard does
MergeGuard for Shopify scans your customers and groups the profiles that look like one person, using name, email, phone and address details. Each group shows what matches. A group where details match closely sorts into Strong, and a group where some details differ sorts into Needs your judgment. You choose the details the merged customer keeps and confirm the whole group once.
Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment. MergeGuard does not add a merge button to POS and does not change how the till creates customers. It gives a shop a list of duplicates to review before a shift, so the clean-up does not happen at the counter.
