What you see after the first scan

After MergeGuard scans your customers, it sorts possible duplicates into groups. Strong means the details match closely. Needs your judgment means some details differ. New shows groups found since your last visit, and All open shows every open group. Under Show, Protected holds groups Shopify won’t merge.

At a glance

  1. Start with Strong

Strong groups have details that match closely. Open one and the review sheet shows why we think it’s one person.

  2. Take your time with Needs your judgment

Some details differ in these groups, so they can be different people. Check what matches and what doesn’t.

  3. Look at Protected under Show

Protected groups are ones Shopify won’t merge. Each shows the Shopify blocker for each profile.

  4. Decide each group

Choose Merge or Not a duplicate. A group you don’t decide stays in your open groups.

MergeGuard scans your customers and groups the profiles that look like one person. Nothing merges until you confirm, or until you switch on automatic merging for strong matches or groups that need your judgment.

The Show filter adds two more: Protected groups, which Shopify won’t merge, and groups Marked not a duplicate. Restore puts a marked group back in your list.

An example from the demo store

In our demo store, the first scan sorted groups like this: 18 Strong, 11 Needs your judgment, 6 Protected, 2 Marked not a duplicate and 7 New Demo store (Northsail Supply). Your own store will show different numbers.

Open a group

Each group opens on a review sheet titled “Why we think it’s one person”. It shows which name, email, phone and address details match across the profiles, and which profile we recommend keeping. You choose the email, phone and address the merged customer keeps, then pick Merge or Not a duplicate.

Before you confirm, the final check says “This can’t be undone.” and “Each merge is recorded in History.” Run the safe merge checklist if you are unsure about a group.

If you have many groups

Merge every strong match in one confirmed pass, or switch on automatic merging. How to merge many duplicate customers at once covers both.
