Delete or merge a duplicate customer in Shopify?
Delete a duplicate customer in Shopify only when it has no orders and none of Shopify’s other deletion limits apply, because a deleted profile can’t be brought back. Shopify won’t delete a profile with orders, so merge it instead. A merge is permanent too, so use either step only for profiles of one person.

A duplicate customer looks like clutter, and deleting it looks like the quick fix. Shopify offers two ways to get rid of the extra profile, and they do different things. This guide sets out what each one does and what stops it, using Shopify’s Help Center as we read it on October 26, 2026. Shopify can change its rules, so check the page before you act on a large list.
Key insight
A deleted customer can’t be restored, and a merged customer can’t be split. Choose by what the extra profile holds, and keep any pair you are unsure about apart.
What deleting does
Shopify’s page on managing customers says “Deleting a customer profile can’t be undone.” When a profile is deleted, the customer’s personal data, such as their name and address, is also redacted from Shopify’s records. Shopify lets you delete one profile at a time or delete selected profiles in bulk, and a bulk delete removes only the profiles that qualify. The rest stay in the list.
Shopify lists the cases where a profile can’t be deleted:
- The customer has pending redaction because of a GDPR erasure request.
- The customer is the recipient of a scheduled gift card that hasn’t been delivered yet.
- The customer has ever had a subscription.
- The customer is associated with one or more orders.
The last limit decides most duplicates. A profile that placed an order can’t be deleted, so a duplicate that holds even one order has to be merged or left alone.
What merging does
Shopify’s merge joins two profiles into one. The page says “After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.” Orders, addresses, notes, tags and the other listed details come together, and the Merged customer section shows what will be kept and what will be discarded before you confirm. If either profile is subscribed to email or SMS marketing, the merged profile is subscribed, and the customer isn’t notified.
Merging has limits of its own. Shopify refuses a merge when either profile has or has had a subscription contract, is linked to a B2B company, has a vaulted credit card or a store credit account, has a Multipass login, was deleted or redacted, or is part of a merge or data request in progress. Why Shopify blocks some merges lists all nine.
Delete or merge
Use this table for the cases that come up most.
| The extra profile | Delete | Merge |
|---|---|---|
| Has orders | Shopify won’t delete it | Possible, unless a merge limit applies |
| Has no orders and never had a subscription | Possible unless another deletion limit applies, and it can’t be undone | Possible unless a merge limit applies, and it can’t be undone |
| Has or had a subscription contract | Shopify won’t delete it | Shopify won’t merge it |
| Has a store credit account or another merge limit | Check the deletion limits above | Shopify won’t merge it |
| Might be a different person | Leave it alone | Leave it alone |
For a profile with no orders, a merge brings its tags, notes and other details into the profile you keep, while a delete removes the profile and redacts its personal data. When the extra profile is a real second record of a customer you want to keep, that difference is the reason to prefer the merge.
Erasing personal data is a third step
A customer who asks you to erase their data needs a different step. Shopify says “Erasing personal data is different from deleting a customer profile”. Erasure removes details such as the name, email, phone and address and leaves the profile and its order history in your admin. GDPR, accuracy and duplicate customer data covers how it relates to duplicates.
Before you delete or merge
- Confirm the two profiles belong to one person. Partners, flatmates and gift buyers can share an address or a phone number.
- Check the extra profile for orders, a subscription and a marketing status.
- Decide which profile should remain, and note any email, phone or address worth keeping from the other.
- For a long list, work in groups and stop at any pair you are unsure about.
The safe merge checklist puts the merge checks in order, and how to find duplicate customers in Shopify shows how to build the list in the first place.
