ChatGPT Shopify integration: selling in ChatGPT and appearing in its shopping results
ChatGPT is a product discovery channel for Shopify stores, and Shopify’s Help Center says it is active by default for eligible stores. Shoppers find your products in ChatGPT and buy at your own online store checkout. Your store must sell to customers in the United States. Shopify says selling there carries no fees beyond standard payment processing.

ChatGPT and Shopify work together through Shopify’s own channel, and OpenAI separately runs a feed program for retailers. This page covers both, from Shopify’s Help Center, Shopify’s newsroom and OpenAI’s developer documentation. It says what is available as of November 1, 2026, what you control and what neither company says. For the wider picture of Shopify’s tools for AI agents, see Shopify AI agents and agentic commerce.

Key insight
Shopify’s Help Center describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel. Shoppers find your products there and finish the purchase on your own online store checkout, so your branding, selling strategies and payment methods apply.
Selling on ChatGPT with Shopify: what Shopify says
Shopify’s Help Center says the ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores and acts as a discovery-focused referrer. Shoppers who choose a product complete the purchase on your online store checkout, in an in-app browser or in a new tab on ChatGPT web. ChatGPT has no direct checkout setting to turn on or off.
The page lists these requirements:
- Your store must sell to customers in the United States. It can be based anywhere.
- Your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- You must accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- You must complete the Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy in Settings, then Policies.
- Products sold only to B2B customers are not supported.
On cost, the page says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT and that you pay your standard payment processing fees. Shopify’s newsroom announced the channel on March 24, 2026, and says it needs no separate integrations or apps.
Is there a ChatGPT Shopify integration?
Shopify presents it as part of its built-in Agentic Storefronts, and not as an app to install. The newsroom post says merchants use the Agentic Storefronts settings in the Shopify admin. Shopify’s blog says there is no app install and no custom integration.
The Help Center’s page on managing agentic storefronts places the controls under Sales channels, then Agentic. Shopify’s blog gives a different path, Settings, Sales Channels, Agentic Storefronts, so follow whichever your admin shows.
What OpenAI’s own documentation covers
OpenAI’s commerce documentation is written for retailers and payment providers who integrate directly. It covers product feeds, the Agentic Commerce Protocol and delegated payments.
OpenAI’s guides add the detail:
- Product feeds. The Get started guide says product feed onboarding in ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners, who apply through a form on OpenAI’s site. A merchant uploads a structured feed over SFTP and keeps it current with a full snapshot at least once a day.
- Checkout. The key concepts guide says ChatGPT acts as the customer’s agent and calls the merchant’s checkout endpoints. The merchant’s systems handle checkout state and payment, and OpenAI is not the merchant of record.
- Responsibility. The production guide says the merchant selling the goods and taking payment is the merchant of record and handles refunds and chargebacks.
The pages we read do not mention Shopify. We cannot tell you from OpenAI’s documentation whether a Shopify store needs to apply for the feed program as well. Shopify’s Help Center says that no action is needed for products to be discovered through Shopify Catalog.
How to appear in ChatGPT shopping results
Shopify gives you levers on your product data. It does not publish how ChatGPT ranks products, and Shopify’s blog says ranking factors vary by AI platform.
- Check eligibility. Your store must sell to US customers, and your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog. The Help Center says your admin shows a product count or an Ineligible warning with the reason.
- Fill in your policies. Complete the Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy pages.
- Keep product data complete. Shopify Catalog sends title, description, options, images, price and availability by default. Use Channel mapping for custom data in metafields, and group variants into one listing.
- Place legal disclosures early. Put any legal disclosures a product needs in the first 6,000 characters of its description, as the ChatGPT page asks.
- Check prohibited categories. Check your products against OpenAI’s prohibited categories. The Help Center says products in those categories do not appear in ChatGPT results.
- To step back, remove ChatGPT’s access under Sales channels, then Agentic. The Help Center says it can take up to 7 days to take effect and does not affect Shop or other platforms.
- To keep a product out of ChatGPT entirely, set it to Unlisted. Opting out of Catalog access does not stop ChatGPT referencing your products through web crawling or indexing. Unlisted also removes the product from sitemaps, search engines and your store search.
OpenAI’s product feed specification lists separate requirements for ads and for checkout. We did not read what ads exist in ChatGPT or who can buy them.
What happens to the order and the customer
This section is our reasoning from the sources below, and neither Shopify nor OpenAI says it.
The ChatGPT page says the purchase happens at your online store checkout. The data and privacy page says order details go to an AI channel only when an order is placed in a channel with direct checkout, such as Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Meta. ChatGPT has no direct checkout.
The newsroom post says orders appear in your admin with ChatGPT referral attribution. The Help Center’s ChatGPT page does not explain how ChatGPT-referred orders are attributed, so check Shopify’s reporting pages.
So a ChatGPT referral reaches you as an ordinary checkout on your store, with the rules that apply to every checkout. A shopper who has an account under one email and checks out as a guest with another can become a second profile, as guest checkout does.
Why Shopify creates duplicate customers lists the other causes. We found no source that measures how many ChatGPT referrals produce duplicates, and we do not estimate it.
If you merge profiles you find, a merge is final, and Shopify says so:
“After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.”
Consent when you merge customers covers what a merge does to marketing choices.
What we do not know
As of November 1, 2026:
- Shopify’s Help Center does not define which stores are eligible, and it does not say how ChatGPT-referred orders are attributed.
- Shopify does not publish how ChatGPT ranks products, and we did not find where OpenAI describes it.
- OpenAI’s documentation we read says nothing about Shopify, and we cannot tell whether a Shopify store also needs to apply to the feed program.
- OpenAI’s announcement and help pages on shopping in ChatGPT would not load for us, so we do not describe what OpenAI has said there about Instant Checkout or how results are chosen.
- We found no source on how many Shopify merchants appear in ChatGPT today beyond Shopify’s own statement that the channel is live for millions of merchants selling to US buyers, made on June 18, 2026.
How we read these sources
We opened each page in the sources list on November 1, 2026 and wrote only what it states, with the page’s date where it gave one. Our reading tool returns a summary of each page, so we paraphrase and do not quote. We did not test any of this in a live store. Shopify and OpenAI change these pages often, so check the page before you act.
