Shopify AI agents and agentic commerce: what merchants need to do

Shopify uses AI agents in three ways: Sidekick, the assistant inside your admin; agentic commerce, where a shopper’s AI assistant finds and buys your products; and developer tools for building agents. For agentic commerce, Shopify’s Help Center says eligible stores are active by default and lists settings you can review.

Shopify AI agents means three different things, and which one you mean decides what to do. This page covers what each is, what is available as of November 1, 2026 and what a merchant can do, using Shopify’s Help Center, its developer changelog and its newsroom.

Key insight

For most merchants the part that matters is Agentic Storefronts, which Shopify’s Help Center says is active by default for eligible stores, with settings under Sales channels, then Agentic. The developer changelog entries from late September and October 2026 flag no merchant action.

What people mean by Shopify AI agents

Sidekick: an assistant for you

Sidekick is Shopify’s AI-powered commerce assistant inside your admin. It can plan multi-step tasks, build Shopify Flow workflows and run calculations on your store data, presenting changes for your review before applying them, Shopify says. The Help page does not state plans, pricing or regional availability.

Agentic commerce: agents that shop for customers

Shopify’s blog, published June 18, 2026, defines agentic commerce as the next stage of online shopping, where AI agents help consumers browse and shop. Most merchants mean this one when they search “Shopify AI agents”.

Agents you build: Shopify’s developer tools

Shopify’s developer docs list what a developer uses to build a shopping agent:

  • a Global Catalog that searches products across Shopify merchants
  • a Storefront Catalog limited to one merchant
  • Cart MCP, Checkout MCP and Order MCP

The docs say they are built on the Universal Commerce Protocol. The page gives developer steps and no merchant instructions.

How agentic commerce works on Shopify

The agentic commerce Shopify merchants can use today runs through Shopify Catalog and a set of AI channels. Shopify describes four steps:

Your products reach AI platformsShopify Catalog structures your product data and sends it to connected AI platforms.
The agent shows productsIt answers questions too. Shopify says ranking factors vary by AI platform.
Checkout runs through ShopifyIn ChatGPT the shopper checks out on your online store in an in-app browser.
The order lands in your adminIt shows the AI channel as its source.
From product data to order, as Shopify describes it.

Shopify’s Help Center says direct checkout can be switched on for Google, Microsoft and Meta channels. Shopify’s newsroom says merchants remain the merchant of record and keep their customer relationships and data.

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) sits underneath, and its site lists Google, Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart among its co-developers.

What is available now

Status as of November 1, 2026, with changelog dates:

  • Agentic Storefronts offers your products in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta, and is active by default for eligible stores.
  • ChatGPT channel gives product discovery in ChatGPT, with purchase on your online store. Your store must sell to customers in the United States. No setup is needed, and you can opt out. See ChatGPT and Shopify.
  • Shop MCP, October 13, 2026, is one connection that lets an agent search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout. Orders appear in your admin like any other order. It is aimed at developers.
  • WebMCP for checkout, September 28, 2026, lets browser agents read and update the checkout in the shopper’s own session; completing it needs the buyer’s confirmation.
  • Buyer consent in Cart MCP and Checkout MCP, October 16, 2026, lets a buyer record privacy and marketing choices through an agent, and your shop receives them with the cart, checkout or order.
  • Location search and lookup, October 22, 2026, lets an agent find a merchant’s retail stores, automatically for stores with a retail location.
  • UCP permalinks at /buy, October 28, 2026, is a new cart and checkout link format. Existing /cart links keep working as the legacy format; keep /cart for selling plans, line item properties, cart notes and cart attributes.

Shopify’s June 18, 2026 blog says Google AI Mode and Gemini were open to select US brands, with a broader rollout underway, and we found no later statement.

What a merchant can do

Work through the settings Shopify documents, in this order.

  1. Open the settings. Go to Sales channels, then Agentic. Shopify’s blog names the path Settings, Sales Channels, Agentic Storefronts, so use the one your admin shows.
  2. Check eligibility. Your admin shows a product count or an Ineligible warning with the reason; the Help Center says only direct-to-consumer sales are supported. B2B-only, login-only and password-protected products are excluded when Shopify can identify them.
  3. Decide on the master switch. “Allow Shopify to manage for me” is on by default. Turning it off lets you set each channel yourself. After you turn Catalog access off, it can take up to 7 days before your product data stops being shared.
  4. Improve your product data. Catalog sends title, description, options, images, price and availability by default. The Help Center says Channel mapping covers custom metafield data, grouped variants and the current or compare-at price.
  5. Fill in the knowledge base. Add facts about returns, shipping, payment and brand. AI agents use it for non-product questions, and the content is public. Shopify says it never changes it for you.
  6. Hide any product you do not want in AI channels. Opting out of a channel does not fully hide products. The Help Center says to set the product to Unlisted, which also removes it from sitemaps, search engines and store search, or to use the seo.hidden metafield.
  7. Read the terms. You must agree to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service, the Help Center says.
ChannelsMaster switch on: All channels stay activeMaster switch off: You set Catalog access and direct checkout for each channel
Who decidesMaster switch on: Shopify manages it for you and enrolls you in new channelsMaster switch off: You set each channel yourself
“Allow Shopify to manage for me” is on by default.

If you use Shopify’s Knowledge Base app, the Help Center says it is being replaced, and stores with more than 1,000 facts must add them manually before the app is deprecated on January 15, 2027.

Why clean customer data matters when an agent buys for a shopper

This section is our reasoning, and Shopify does not say it. The sources say:

  • Orders placed through agents appear in your admin like any other order (Shop MCP entry).
  • For direct-checkout channels (Google, Microsoft and Meta), the data and privacy page says the channel receives order details such as name, email, phone number and address.
  • The buyer consent entry says a buyer’s marketing choices made in a supporting agent reach your shop with the order.

Our reasoning: these orders land in the same customer list as every other order. A shopper with an account under one email who gives an agent another can end up as a second profile, as with guest checkout duplicates. A marketing choice made in an agent would sit on whichever profile the order created. No page we read says how Shopify matches an agent’s order to an existing customer, so we cannot say how often this happens.

On every channel, review duplicate profiles before you merge them, and treat a merge as final, because Shopify says so:

“After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.”

What we do not know

As of November 1, 2026:

  • Shopify’s Help Center does not define which stores are eligible for Agentic Storefronts or list supported countries for the feature as a whole. Only the ChatGPT page names one, the United States.
  • Shopify does not publish how AI platforms rank products, and its blog says ranking factors vary by platform.
  • We found no statement after June 18, 2026 on the Google AI Mode and Gemini rollout.

How we read these sources

We opened each page in the sources list on November 1, 2026 and wrote only what it states. Our reading tool returns summaries, so we paraphrase and do not quote. We did not test any of this in a live store, and Shopify may have changed a page since. Check the page before you act.
