Email typos in Shopify: how a mistake becomes a second customer

A mistyped email can create or keep a profile that Shopify treats as its own customer, because each profile holds one email address and changing an email does not merge profiles. Check first whether the corrected address already belongs to another customer. If it does, review the pair as a possible duplicate. If it does not, correct the address.

A typo at checkout looks small. The order still goes through, the shopper gets on with their day, and your store holds an email address that nobody can read. This guide explains how a typo turns into a customer record, what it costs, and the order to fix things in.

Key insight

A typo fix and a merge are two decisions. Check whether the corrected address is already taken, then fix the address or review the pair as a duplicate.

How a typo becomes a customer

Shopify’s Help Center says “Each profile can have only one email address.” It also says a profile is created when someone places an order, so an order placed with a mistyped email gives you a profile for that mistyped email.

A second route is a shopper who comes back and types the right address. If no profile holds it, Shopify’s customer accounts page says a sign-in with an email that no profile uses creates a new profile automatically. Changing an email address afterwards does not help either: the same page says customers can’t merge profiles by changing their email address.

In MergeGuard’s demo store the typo is gmial.com → gmail.com Demo store (Northsail Supply). Both addresses can end up as separate customers, each with part of the order history.

What a typo costs

A typo address is a contact your emails cannot reach, which is our reasoning from how email works rather than a figure from Shopify. Order updates and newsletters go to an address that does not exist, and the shopper can look like someone who never opens anything.

The email world treats this as a list problem. Yahoo’s sender guidance says: “Remove invalid recipients from your list promptly.” Keeping typo addresses on your list works against that advice.

In MergeGuard’s demo store, one bulk correction read Fix 24 emails → 24 fixed · 9 subscribers now reachable Demo store (Northsail Supply). Once the typos were fixed, those subscribers could be reached again.

Fixing it at the source

You can reduce new typos at checkout. Shopify’s contact method setting offers “Phone number or email” or “Email”.

The setting “Require customers to sign in to their account before checkout” limits contact to email and hides accelerated checkout buttons such as Apple Pay in the online-store cart. Accounts sign in with a one-time 6-digit code sent to the email address, so a mistyped address cannot receive its code. That follows from how the code works and is our reasoning, not a Shopify claim about typos. Requiring sign-in adds a step for every shopper, and we found no primary source with numbers on what it does to sales.

Fixing it in the list

Shopify’s Help Center says a profile’s email can be changed at any time by editing the customer profile. On desktop, open the customer, choose Manage, then Edit contact information.

The page we read does not say what happens when the corrected address already belongs to another profile. Check the address in your customer search before you edit. If another profile holds it, review the two profiles as a possible duplicate instead of editing.

For many profiles, a CSV import can update customers by matching email or phone number when you tick the overwrite option. That option replaces all customer data on a matched profile, including the import tags, so it is a heavy tool for a typo. Prefer single edits for a few typos, or review a suggested list one at a time.

When the corrected address is taken

If the corrected address is already used by a profile with the same person’s orders, you have a duplicate pair, and editing the address cannot fix it. Review the pair with the signals in how to find duplicate customers in Shopify.

Because you choose which email the merged profile keeps when you review a group, a typo you leave in place can be the address you end up keeping. When the corrected address is free, the safe merge checklist lists “fix a mistyped email first” for this reason. A Shopify merge is permanent: “After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.”

Where a contact fix fits

A contact fix corrects a mistyped email domain after you confirm it, when the corrected address is free, and it doesn’t change the customer’s subscription. A merge works differently: it is permanent. Help explains the steps for a contact fix.
