Why Shopify and Klaviyo subscriber counts don’t match

Shopify and Klaviyo subscriber counts don’t match because each system keeps consent on its own record and counts something different. Shopify’s Email subscribers segment lists customers who agreed to marketing email. Klaviyo’s billing count includes every profile it can email, whatever its consent. An unsubscribe crosses over only when a sync setting carries it.

On this page

A Shopify store with Klaviyo connected has two lists of people who agreed to hear from it, and the two rarely match. We read Shopify’s and Klaviyo’s help pages on November 1, 2026. Both change their products, so check your own account.

Key insight

Shopify and Klaviyo each hold their own consent record for a person. A sync copies some changes between them and leaves the rest, so the counts drift apart.

Words in this guide

Email subscriberA customer who agreed to receive your promotional email.
Active profileA Klaviyo profile that can be emailed, whatever its consent. Klaviyo bills for these.
Suppressed profileA profile that stays in your account but cannot receive marketing email.
SyncA setting that copies some changes between the systems.
Double opt-inA sign-up that asks the person to confirm by email before they join the list.

Why don’t my Shopify and Klaviyo subscriber counts match?

Your counts differ because Shopify and Klaviyo count different things and keep consent on different records. Shopify’s Email subscribers segment lists customers who agreed to receive promotional email. Klaviyo says an active profile (in plain words: a contact Klaviyo can email, and the kind it counts toward your plan) is any profile that can be emailed, “regardless of consent status”, so billing includes people who never subscribed.

How do you see email subscribers in Shopify?

To see email subscribers in Shopify, open Customers in the admin and click the Email subscribers segment. A customer’s page shows their preferences in a Marketing section, as Shopify’s email subscriber list management page describes.

What does email subscription status mean in Shopify?

Email subscription status says whether a customer is subscribed to your marketing email. Shopify’s customer segment filters list six values:

  • Not subscribed
  • Subscribed
  • Pending (in the process of subscribing)
  • Invalid (the email address marketing state is invalid)
  • Unsubscribed
  • Redacted

Where does the sync leave gaps?

The sync leaves gaps because it fills one list, follows its own subscribing rules and passes on only some changes. Klaviyo’s help describes these cases.

  • One list. The sync adds customers who accept marketing at checkout, or sign up to a Shopify form, to the one list you select. Klaviyo says existing contacts need to place an order to be subscribed through it.
  • Double opt-in. On a double opt-in list, new subscribers must confirm by email first, and the historical sync sends no double opt-in emails.
  • No opt-in is not an unsubscribe. Klaviyo says not opting in at checkout differs from unsubscribing, so an existing subscription stays.
  • Accepts Marketing is no longer the signal. Klaviyo says its sync works from Shopify’s subscription model, and an older Accepts Marketing value of false did not by itself mean the customer had unsubscribed.
  • SMS and deletions. Klaviyo says SMS consent syncs only when the person first subscribes to SMS in Shopify, and deleting a profile in one system does not delete it in the other.

Why is Klaviyo not syncing with Shopify?

Klaviyo’s troubleshooting page gives one fix: re-authenticate with Shopify, choosing “Re-Authenticate with Shopify” and not “Update Settings”, and confirm the new connection details.

  • To check: compare the latest event for a metric such as Placed Order in the Recent data section with your store’s activity.
  • If data is still missing after the expected sync interval, contact Klaviyo support. The page also lists a frozen store and an uninstalled Klaviyo app as causes.

In our reading, a count that differs while orders arrive normally usually comes from the rules above, not a broken connection. See Klaviyo’s troubleshooting page.

How do you use Klaviyo in Shopify?

To use Klaviyo in Shopify, install the Shopify integration from the Integrations tab in Klaviyo, confirm the account and store, and click Integrate. Klaviyo advises reviewing the sync options first. See Klaviyo’s Getting started with Shopify guide.

How do I check one person in Shopify and in Klaviyo?

To check one person, look up the same email address and phone number in both systems and compare.

Search ShopifySearch Customers for the email address and phone number. Read the Marketing section.
Search KlaviyoSearch Profiles for the same email address and phone number. Read the Email section of the Details tab.
Count the recordsTwo records for one person explain many mismatches.
Compare the statusCheck the suppression status in Klaviyo as well as the subscription.
Read the activityKlaviyo records a Subscribed to List event when a subscriber syncs in.
Check one person in both systems

Repeat for a few people. The same pattern each time, such as Shopify unsubscribes that never reach Klaviyo, points to a setting.

Where do duplicate customers fit in?

Duplicate customers fit in because each Shopify customer becomes its own Klaviyo profile. Klaviyo’s Shopify data reference says it creates a unique profile for every customer it syncs, so one person with two Shopify customers can be two Klaviyo profiles, one subscribed and one not.

Two Shopify customers sync as two Klaviyo profiles, one subscribed and one not

Shopify says that when a customer is subscribed in one profile and not the other, the merged profile is subscribed. What happens to email and SMS consent when you merge sets out both systems’ rules. Klaviyo’s help does not say whether a Shopify merge reaches Klaviyo, so check a merged person in both systems. Two emailable profiles also count twice toward billing, as duplicate Klaviyo profiles from Shopify explains.

What if an unsubscribe doesn’t sync between Shopify and Klaviyo?

If an unsubscribe does not sync, treat the person as unsubscribed in both systems now, then find out which direction is not syncing.

  • Shopify to Klaviyo. A newer email unsubscribe in Shopify unsubscribes the profile in Klaviyo only when the Sync unsubscribes to Klaviyo setting is on, which needs the Collect unsubscribes option in the Shopify integration settings. Klaviyo says unsubscribes do not carry over if the setting is off or unavailable, and does not say why it is sometimes unavailable.
  • Klaviyo to Shopify. When the sync from Klaviyo to Shopify is set up for email consent, later subscribes and unsubscribes in Klaviyo update Shopify. Suppression status does not sync to Shopify.

One member of Klaviyo’s community reported on October 26, 2026 that the Sync unsubscribes to Klaviyo option is missing from their integration, with a Shopify unsubscribe still subscribed in Klaviyo hours later. A community manager replied on October 28 offering a direct message, and the thread shows no public answer. That is one member’s account, not Klaviyo documentation.

Until you know the cause, do these in order.

  1. Unsubscribe or suppress the profile in Klaviyo. A suppressed profile stays in your account and cannot receive marketing email.
  2. Edit the Shopify customer’s Marketing section if it still shows the person as subscribed.
  3. Look for the Collect unsubscribes and Sync unsubscribes to Klaviyo options in the Shopify integration settings. If they are missing, ask Klaviyo support why.

An unsubscribe is a person’s choice, so do not send to them while you sort out the sync. Ask a local lawyer how the rules apply where your customers live.

What MergeGuard does and doesn’t do

MergeGuard for Shopify does not fix consent sync. It does not read or change consent in Klaviyo, does not carry unsubscribes between the systems and sends no messages. A list sync to Klaviyo never changes who is subscribed. What it does:

  • It finds duplicate customers in Shopify and merges them there, so each person has one record to sync.
  • Its Newsletter cleanup list shows subscribers on more than one profile, so you see who would get the same email twice.
  • With Klaviyo merging switched on, it asks Klaviyo to merge the matching profiles after a merge in Shopify, and Klaviyo’s own rules decide the merged profile’s consent. Merges are permanent in both systems.

If your counts still disagree after you check a handful of people, the cause is in sync settings that only Shopify’s and Klaviyo’s support can see. See sending the same newsletter twice for duplicate addresses and how to reduce Klaviyo active profiles for billing.
