How to clean your Shopify customer list before Black Friday and Cyber Monday
To clean your Shopify customer list before Black Friday, find duplicate customers early, merge only the pairs you are sure of, and finish before your sending volume starts to climb. A merge is permanent, and a subscribed profile makes the merged profile subscribed, so leave unclear pairs apart for the peak.

Black Friday 2026 is November 27, 2026. The biggest sends of the year go to the list you have now, so duplicate customer profiles (in plain words: two or more records in your store that belong to one real person), mistyped emails and wrong consent (in plain words: whether a shopper has agreed to marketing emails or texts) come along with them. This guide shows how to clean your Shopify customer list before Black Friday and Cyber Monday, in the order that keeps a BFCM customer list safe to send to.
We read Shopify’s and Klaviyo’s pages on November 1, 2026. Both companies update their advice, so read their current pages before you plan your sends. For the sales figures behind the peak, read Black Friday statistics: worldwide, by country and by segment.
Key insight
A merge is permanent and a subscribed profile makes the merged profile subscribed. Merge the pairs you are sure about early, and leave the unclear ones apart for the peak.
Words in this guide
What to do and when
Klaviyo’s checklist tells senders to raise their sending volume in the weeks before the sale, so the list should be settled before the ramp starts. These steps are our suggested order, built from what Shopify and Klaviyo say.
Pausing in sale week is our advice. Neither Shopify nor Klaviyo says it.
Find the duplicates first
A shopper with two profiles can sit on your list twice, and a VIP can look smaller than they are.
- Count them. How to find duplicate customers in Shopify shows how to count them from an export. Start with the pairs that share a phone number or an address, then decide which are one person.
- Keep relatives apart. Relatives who share an address are separate customers, as same address, same person or two people explains.
- Fix typos. Email typos in Shopify customer records shows how to spot a mistyped address.
Merge facts that matter before a big send
Two Shopify rules decide how careful to be. A merge is permanent:
“After the profiles are merged, you can’t reverse the process.”
And a merge can change who you may email:
“If the customer is subscribed to email and SMS text marketing in one profile, but not in the other, then the merged profile is subscribed.”
Because the merged profile takes the subscribed status, a wrong merge could subscribe someone who never agreed. That is the reason not to rush an unclear pair in the weeks before a big send.
Should you merge this pair before the big send?
For a pair you leave apart, you can leave the second address out of your sends. Excluding an address keeps its consent record unchanged, as why customers get your newsletter twice explains.
Klaviyo merges are permanent too, and they carry consent and suppression records along. What happens to email and SMS consent when you merge customers sets out what each platform documents. Check the kept profile in both systems before you send.
Shopify’s checklist also says, in its section on planning and launching email campaigns early, to make sure any email addresses you collect are high-quality and that you have consent to send promotional emails.
Check your VIP list
Shopify suggests tailoring offers to customer segments, and names one:
“Consider tailoring exclusive offers to various customer segments, like your VIPs.”
Klaviyo’s checklist lists VIP customers among the key segments to build before scheduling campaigns. A VIP list is only as good as the profiles behind it.
When a regular’s orders sit on two profiles, each profile shows part of their spend, and split profiles hide your VIPs shows a worked example. Before you send a VIP offer, add up each person’s spend across their profiles and check who is on the list and who is missing.
Check your win-back list
A win-back list built from last-order dates can include people who still buy under another profile, and an offer to them costs a discount for no reason. Combine a person’s profiles first and use their latest order.
- Who should not get a win-back discount lists who to leave out.
- When has a customer stopped buying explains how to judge it.
Send to each person once
Klaviyo’s guide to sending to your full list says how often to do it:
“You should only send to your full list once or twice a year.”
Klaviyo’s guide and its checklist add three more rules. They are Klaviyo’s, so they apply if you send with Klaviyo.
- Engagement. It defines engagement as “opened or clicked”.
- Outside BFCM. Your main audience should be people who engaged over the last 30, 60 or 90 days.
- A weak deliverability score. When the score is poor or fair two weeks before BFCM, a full-list send is probably too big a risk. Klaviyo suggests restricting the send to people who engaged in the past 365 days.
A duplicate means one person gets the same email twice, with two chances to mark it as spam. Check your sender setup against Google and Yahoo sender requirements before the peak. If you use Klaviyo, reduce Klaviyo active profiles explains what changes the profile count that your plan is measured against.
A pre-send checklist
Know how many people have more than one profile
Count from an export, so you can tell later what changed.
Merge only the pairs you are sure are one person
A merge is permanent, so leave the rest apart.
Check consent on both profiles of every merged pair
A subscribed profile makes the merged profile subscribed.
Fix mistyped emails
A typo can prevent the intended customer receiving your email.
Add up VIP spend across each person’s profiles
Check who is on the list before a VIP offer goes out.
Leave out win-back targets who buy on another profile
Use a person’s latest order across all their profiles.
Leave the second address of a duplicate out of big sends
One person, one copy of the email.
Pause merging in sale week
Review the pairs you left apart after the sale.
What this guide does not claim
We have no figure for what a cleaner list does to sales, so this guide makes no revenue claim and quotes no benchmark. The sending advice comes from Klaviyo and Shopify, not from our own testing, and it may have changed since November 1, 2026.
Step by step
Count your duplicates
Find the people who have more than one profile and decide which pairs are clear.
Merge only the clear pairs
A merge is permanent, so leave any pair you are unsure about as it is.
Check consent on both profiles
A subscribed profile makes the merged profile subscribed.
Rebuild your VIP and win-back lists
Count each person once, then check who is on each list.
Send to each person once
Leave the second address of a duplicate out of your big sends.
Stop merging in sale week
Keep the list steady while the peak sends go out, and review pairs afterwards.
